Today is the Day

Hello!  How’s it going?

Sorry I’ve been away for a bit.  It’s been busy over here, but great!  We had a great weekend filled with visitors and outings and fun stuff, so it was all good.  Yesterday was one of those days where the whole day goes by and you say “hey wait, what happened to the day?”  Such is life.

I’ve decided that this is the week that I am going to start Couch to 5K.  Yes, exciting!!  As I was walking on Friday (solo - I did a walk with Jillian and then later did a walk by myself - 2 miles for the day) I decided to give a full minute of jogging a try.  And keep in mind I use the term jogging loosely as:

a) I haven’t run or jogged in almost a year;
b) I am carrying 29 pounds of extra weight these days (more of that later this week);
c) I am only 3 weeks out from giving birth, so I wanted to take it S-L-O-W;
d) I didn’t know how my ankle would feel so I took it easy

Bottom line, it felt great!  Yeah I was slightly winded after that minute, but hey I gotta start somewhere.  I truly feel like I am starting ALL OVER AGAIN with learning how to run, pace myself, breathe so I don’t die, etc.  And that’s okay!  I am willing to start at square one just so I can get back, and possibly even improve myself.  It’s kind of exciting!

And I have downloaded an awesome C25K app on my iPod Touch that I tested out.

It’s super awesome, it tells you when to walk and when to run (since in the beginning you’re alternating walking and running) and allows you to sync up playlists from your iPod (or phone), etc.  It’s flippin’ great!  So much easier than using my Garmin to time everything.  The name of it is “C25K Free” in the iTunes store if anyone is interested.

I was going to start Day 1, Week 1 yesterday, but once the evening rolled around I decided that it wasn’t the right day to start it up (confession, I had eaten too many treats in the afternoon to feel good on my run - I’m working on this).  So today is the day.  Once Hubs is done with work I’m on my way to my triumphant return to running.  Woohoo!  I even created a new playlist to get me pumped, so I’m ready!

As for the rest of today, I’ve already gotten some picture stuff done, created some birth announcement ideas, read some blogs, watched The Bachelor and Biggest Loser from last night - man, this maternity leave/no working thing is kind of nice.  Now I’m going to try and sneak a sandwich before Miss Jillian decides to wake up.  Wish me luck, I’m usually unsuccessful at this, she is sneaky and knows when I want to eat and decides that she wants to eat at the exact same time.  Hmph.  Have a great rest of the day!

Questions for you …

- Have you ever done Couch to 5K?
- Anyone doing any races anytime soon?

  1. Never did Couch to 5k.
    On Saturday, the family (all 4 of us) ran the first ever 5k road race in our hometown. We ran Daniel pace and finished in just under 45 minutes. He's a sprinter not a distance runner.
    I'm training for the Hollywood 1/2 marathon on April 6th. So far my longest run is 6.8 miles in an hour. Not real fast but it works. My long run this week will be just over 7 miles. I'm trying to increase my mileage by 1/2 mile each week. I should max out at 10.7 to 11 miles before the race. I'm running solo which is weird. I usually race with hubby. Hopefully I can maintain my pace over the 13 miles and come in around 2 -2:15. As long as I finish, I'll be okay.

  3. Love C25K! It's a great place to start, or way to re-train. You'll be back in racing form in no time!
    Currently, I am using Jeff Galloway's 5K training plan for the Everest Challenge -- which is also my next race.
